Dicks Sporting Goods Inc.
-
Dick’s Sporting Goods is the largest American sporting goods retailer, offering a wide range of athletic apparel and outdoor gear. Alongside its retail business, DSG has two in-house lifestyle brands, CALIA and VRST.
At Publicis, my team of four was challenged to develop a holiday campaign for DSG and work directly with the brand team. The guidelines? No budget, no brief, and no set deliverables. In other words, the sky was the limit.
-
Develop a holiday campaign pitch that builds on an existing strategic campaign while expanding its reach to new growth audiences.
Go beyond the ask and create ready-to-launch deliverables that could bring the campaign to life if it needed to launch tomorrow.
Create a detailed ESOP that leverages diverse media channels while delivering clear ROI on every media dollar spent.

Building the Brief – Before beginning campaign ideation, we did what any good creative strategist should do first: identify the problem through research. We started by connecting with the DSG brand team and learned that the brand was struggling to connect with younger audiences beyond traditional athlete demographics. From there, we conducted three separate competitive analyses across media and social intelligence for DSG, CALIA, and VRST using Pathmatics. We then worked with the DSG sponsorship team to evaluate previous Want It, Got It campaigns and identify the key growth audiences the company wanted to reach. This also helped us determine which holidays presented the strongest opportunities to connect with each audience. Finally, using GWI, we built consumer personas for each growth audience. We brought these insights together to develop a creative brief that served as the foundation for the campaign.
Crafting the Campaign – With our three growth audiences identified, we used the brief to build on the previous Want It, Got It Ariana Grande campaign. We saw the winter holiday season as an opportunity to create a more emotional connection with key non-athletic growth segments, while using a Gen Z icon to deliver the message. From there, we identified opportunities across earned, shared, owned, and paid channels through an ESOP strategy aligned with the Feeling Cozy All Winter Round campaign. This approach also created opportunities to amplify CALIA and VRST products throughout the campaign.
Delivering the Message – Once the campaign strategy was finalized, our team went beyond the initial ask and developed the materials needed to bring the idea to life. This included scripts for creative ad spots, moodboards, a detailed media plan, a budget tracker, product placement proposals, an influencer activation plan and cost breakdown, competitive analyses, and a full campaign walkthrough. We also partnered with the Publicis Groupe new business team to bring the presentation to life, creating an engaging pitch experience that included campaign themed cupcakes, a printed program, and QR codes.

Over six weeks with no creative restrictions, our team used the holiday campaign challenge as an opportunity to develop work that was both creatively ambitious and deeply rooted in data and ROI. Every creative asset was built around Ariana Grande while staying aligned with DSG's brand objectives. At the same time, the campaign opened the door to new growth audiences and broader brand goals.
Our work was ultimately recognized by our Senior Vice President and shared with the broader company. The project also had an impact beyond the original pitch, with the Haleon Publicis team incorporating our influencer activation plan and product integration proposals for Advil and Tums.

Campaign Pitch
CREATIVE
BRIEF
Dick’s Sporting Goods enters Q3 with a strong foundation in its Sports Change Lives mission. Looking ahead to Q4 2026 and into 2027, our goal is to continue expanding beyond sports-driven shoppers and position DSG as a one-stop destination for everyday needs. From sporting goods and wellness products to winter apparel and gear, we aim to build on the momentum of our recent Want It? Got It campaign.
To bring this vision to life, we plan to launch a holiday campaign centered around DSG’s winter assortment, highlighting in-house brands such as CALIA and VRST, which offer fleeces, apparel, coats, footwear, and other seasonal essentials. The campaign will target adults ages 25–54 through a full-funnel marketing strategy that combines broad top-of-funnel reach with more precise audience-to-product matching. To differentiate the campaign, a winter holiday-associated celebrity spokesperson will serve as the face of the campaign, bringing a central theme of connection and community to life and encouraging consumers to gather, celebrate, and combat winter isolation.

PRODUCT PLACEMENT PROPOSAL
DSG has the opportunity to partner with Focker-in-Law (Comedy), the fourth installment of the Meet the Parents franchise, releasing Nov. 25, 2026. The film reunites the original cast and shifts focus to Greg and Pam Focker’s adult son, Henry, who becomes engaged to Olivia Jones (Ariana Grande)—flipping the familiar dynamic as Greg becomes the one struggling to give his blessing. The film’s family-forward, humor-led storytelling aligns directly with DSG’s holiday themes of togetherness and seasonal joy, and the campaign’s Ariana Grande (“Santa Tell Me”) creative foundation makes the fit especially natural.
The franchise audience skews 25–45 with an equal gender split, aligning with DSG’s holiday target (Adults 18–54) and supporting balanced in-film visibility for CALIA and VRST. Prior box office performance also signals meaningful scale. The partnership will feature two key, story- motivated product placements: the Outdoor Family Training “Gear Up” Scene and the Family Farewell Gifting Scene. While physical activity is central to both the plot and the integration, the film will avoid depicting damaged DSG product or visible wear-and-tear on CALIA/VRST to protect performance and quality perception.
DSG will secure full outdoor-gear category exclusivity, supplying branded product across key training sequences (including outerwear/jackets) and will be positioned as the film’s official “outdoor lifestyle” partner. Beyond the film, the partnership will extend into the press junket, premiere, and social verticals. Success will be measured through a post-campaign reporting package combining public reach and social performance metrics to quantify impact and ROI.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Genre: Comedy
Release Date: Nov 25th, 2026
Focker-in-Law is the fourth installment in the Meet the Parents comedy franchise. The earlier films follow Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) as he tries (and repeatedly fails) to win the approval of his intimidating future in-laws, Jack and Dina Byrnes. This new chapter reunites the original cast but shifts the spotlight to Greg and Pam’s (Teri Polo) now-adult son, Henry (Skyler Gisondo), who gets engaged to Olivia Jones (Ariana Grande). This time, the dynamic flips, and Greg is the one struggling to give his blessing—and he’s about to discover that being the “protective parent” is a lot harder than it looks.

Audience & Reach
The film naturally taps into the winter holiday themes of family connection, seasonal joy, and togetherness— the same themes that our campaign is built around. Our DSG holiday campaign also leans into humor-driven creative across ads and social verticals, aligning well with Focker-in-Law’s comedic genre and helping our messaging stand out in a crowded winter advertising season. Additionally, the campaign is rooted in an Ariana Grande lyric from “Santa Tell Me,”making a placement in a film led by Ariana Grande an especially strong fit—and a natural extension of the campaign’s foundation.
The film includes several outdoor-action moments that present strong integration opportunities. This includes a scene with the grandfather, Mr. Byrnes. As the family patriarch, Mr. Byrnes frequently pushes the family into rigorous outdoor “training,” these scenes create a natural moment to feature Focker and Byrnes family members gearing up in Dick’s Sporting Goods apparel ahead of family events.
While the film includes semi-intense sporting and physical activity moments, we will ensure it avoids depicting damaged Dick’s Sporting Goods products or visible wear and tear on CALIA and VRST gear. The goal is to deliver subtle, additive product placement that supports realism without creating any implication that performance or product quality is compromised when engaging in intense outdoor activities.
Why DSG Holiday Campaign fits
Outdoor Family Training Scene
Each family member prepares for a grandfather-led training session (Robert De Niro) ahead of a grassy outdoor activity sequence. The scene plays as a “gearing up” moment: characters put on their apparel and accessories as hero-style music builds, setting up the upcoming action. Ariana wears CALIA, while Greg Focker and the grandfather wear VRST, creating a clean brand wardrobe split that supports both lines without overstating the placement.
Logo visibility will be partial and held to 1–2 seconds per beat, ensuring the integration reads as authentic wardrobe rather than overt promotion. There is no dialogue mention of the products. The tone is straightforward and energetic (not comedic), with products shown naturally during preparation for the training activity.
Farewell Family Scene – AG x Ben Stiller Scene
At the end of the movie, Greg Focker and Olivia Jones come to a mutual understanding that, despite their different personalities and ideas for Henry’s future, they both want what’s best for him. Their shared love of biking and cooking helps them connect further, revealing that they have more in common than they initially realized. In the closing scene, Olivia and Henry stand in the family doorway and say their goodbyes to the Focker/Byrnes family before presenting each relative with a personalized DSG winter scarf featuring their name and the DSG logo.
Logo visibility will be clear on the first scarf as it is handed to Jack Byrnes, with approximately 3–5 seconds of full scarf visibility, including the name detail. Olivia then steps back and removes additional scarves from her bag for the rest of the family. The camera pans across the foyer as each family member tries their custom DSG gift, naturally highlighting the winter apparel. The scene ultimately supports the broader DSG campaign focus on holiday gifting, family connection, and boosting DSG’s winter apparel visibility.

A class of young women aged 25-45 doing yoga poses on mats in a studio space (camera right side). There are glass windows behind the room from where snow is falling. The instructor is on the left side of the room (camera) leading the session.
*Tapping on window*Ariana Grande dressed in an uncomfortable Santa suit enters through the window.
[AG]: Wow, this looks fun.
Pulls out a mat and tries some poses. The rest of the class looks at her in shock and confusion.
[AG]: I’ve really needed to get a workout in.
Ariana continues her weird poses, oblivious to the entire class looking at her. However, she struggles to do these poses properly in her suit.
[AG]: Ooo this one is hard.
Looks at the person doing poses effortlessly next to her.
[AG]: Wow.... How are you doing that?
[Pilates Student]: I’m wearing CALIA. It’s super comfy and flexible, keeps me warm... AND I think looks cute.
Both Ariana and class-goer check themselves out in the mirror (right side of the room).
[AG]: Oooo you do look nice.
*Snaps her finger* Ariana Grande is now fitted in a fully functional CALIA workout set.
[Entire Class]: Oooooo
Ad ends with the entire class now working out, with Ariana Grande working out with noticeably more ease and flexibility.

A young woman (college student) bundled in a DSG blanket and beanie exits her apartment building on a snowy winter morning. She wraps her hands around a warm coffee.
[VOICEOVER]: What's your version of cozy?
She smiles and tightens the blanket around her, and walks down the sidewalk.
The student walks past a city park, where we see a runner effortlessly moving through the cold. The runner wears Nike winter running gear, Brooks shoes, and thermal accessories. The woman slows down. And her phone gives her a notification “ready to pause your workout?”
[Runner]: Now that's not my version of cozy.
The runner laughs while continuing her stride.
[VOICEOVER]: For some, cozy means staying warm.
The runner passes a group of friends loading skis and snowboards into an SUV. Everyone wears a mix of Patagonia, Helly Hansen, and winter accessories from DSG. One friend turns away from the conversation and looks directly at the camera.
[Friend #1]: For me? It’s this.
They shut the trunk and drive toward the mountains.
[VOICEOVER]: For others, it's coming back home after some time apart.
A warm dining room glowing with holiday lights. Three generations sit around a large dinner table passing food, laughing, and telling stories. A young man gets up from the table wearing an oversized VRST sweater (camera zooms onto it) and cozy socks as he helps bring out dessert.
[Grandfather]: Now this is cozy.
Everyone laughs.
CUT TO:
A city apartment filled with friends in comfortable VRST joggers, hoodies, and loungewear. The friends appear to be talking about something.
Someone is reshuffling the cards.
Another grabs snacks from the kitchen.
One friend wraps up in a blanket while everyone argues over a board game.
[Friend #1 in Blanket]: No, THIS is cozy.
[Friend #2]: You're only saying that because you're winning.
Laughter.
[VOICEOVER]: Sometimes it's the people who make it cozy.
Camera pans away from the apartment and out the window to the night sky where snow is falling down.
[VOICEOVER]: Whether you're heading out into winter with your beanie held high, or staying in with the people you love
Everyone from the previous scenes looks directly into camera
[VOICEOVER]: Cozy looks different for everyone. But however you define cozy, Dick's has your version of it.

A young man is at work and is inside a cubicle doing work on his laptop. His colleague then taps on his desk
[Colleague]: Yoo, I’m heading out, but guess it’s going to snow today.
[Young Man]: What really? I haven’t bought a winter jacket yet...
[Colleague]: Shoot. Better get on that, cause it’s that time of the year now. See ya.
Young man waves goodbye and then looks up the weather report on his phone. The forecast is heavy snow. He walks up from his desk and out his window and sees a NYC skyline filled with snow. He texts his mom about the snow. She responds, “I told you, you need a winter coat”, followed up with “don’t worry, check some options on here”, and a link to VRST’s winter options. We then see the Young Man falling back into his swivel chair, and opening up the link to check out all the winter apparel options.
We see him smiling and nodding as above his head, icons with different winter apparel (from shoes, fleeces, vests, and winter coats) all pop above him.
Scene change. Young Man is now walking outside the office with snow falling around him, while wearing his DSG winter coat. He then runs into his colleague on the way out.
[Colleague]: Looking good man.
[Young Man]: Thanks. I’m wearing VRST.
[Voiceover]: Get your VRST winter gear now, and stay cozy all winter round. Only at Dicks Sporting Goods
